The 8-week timeline for your first internship abroad
Most students start too late. This week-by-week plan gets a strong first application out without an all-nighter.
Weeks 1–2: shortlist. Pick eight programmes, not eighty. Two ambitious, four realistic, two safe.
Weeks 3–4: build the core documents once — a one-page CV, a research or motivation statement you can adapt, and a transcript scan.
Week 5: ask for recommendations. Give referees your CV, the programme description and the deadline in the same message.
Weeks 6–7: tailor each statement to the host lab or team. Name the person you want to work with and why.
Week 8: submit early, then log everything in your tracker so deadline reminders can chase you rather than the other way round.
